BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Freshman 141-pounder Alfred Bannister placed third in his second straight open, Chanse Menendez placed fourth at 184 pounds and TJ Guidice won four matches 165 to lead the Terps at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open Sunday in Binghamton, N.Y.
Bannister, who finished third at last weekend's Clarion Open, made a terrific run through wrestlebacks, winning six times to place third after dropping his third round match. Menendez advanced to the semifinals and eventually finished fourth.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, Bannister nabbed a 6-5 decision over Princeton's Jordan Laster in the second round. The LaPlata native then dropped his match to Todd Preston of Harvard, 2-1, in sudden victory to drop in the consolation bracket.
Bannister eked out a 3-2 decision over Jordan Velez of Sacred Hear before recording two straight falls over Bloomsburg's Max Good and Cleveland State's Jayce Carr. “Baby J” advanced to the consolation semifinals with a 5-4 win over Matt Bryer of Lock Haven.
In the consolation semis, Bannister was once again on the right end of a close match, defeating Binghamton's Dylan Caruana, 10-8, in double overtime. Bannister scored his most points of the tournament in the third place match, getting past Will Koll of Finger Lakes Prep, 12-9.
A transfer from Nassau Community College, Menendez received a bye in the first round before recording major decisions against USMAPS' Gavin Berkley and Penn State's Nick Weldon to advance to the semifinals.
Menendez would rebound from his semifinal loss to win his consolation semi over Xavier Dye of Cleveland State to advance to the third place match. Jake Mckeever of Binghamton would best Menendez in that match, taking a 9-2 decision.
Guidice made a nice run at 165 after losing his opening round contest. The junior nabbed two falls, a forfeit and a decision before eventually falling in the fifth consolation round.
