COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland women's tennis team fell to No. 48 Virginia Tech, 5-2, at the Tennis Center at College Park Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (5-4, 1-3) won the doubles point, but only produced one singles win. Maryland went 1-1 overall on the weekend with a win over Pittsburgh on Friday.
In the doubles session, the Terps fell behind early but rallied back with some inspired play. Olga and Nataliya Bredikhina started the comeback with an 8-5 victory over Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar.
At No. 1, Welma Luus and Kristina Hovsepyan played fantastic defense on match point to close out Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita, 9-8 (7-3) and give the Terps the doubles point.
The Hokies jumped on the Terps in singles, winning the first set in five of six matches. Mita squared the match at 1-1 with a win over Olga Bredikhina. Shortly after, Kelly Williford eased past Luus, 6-2, 6-2.
Ilinca Stoica put Virginia Tech ahead by two with a victory over Kristina Hovsepyan at No. 2. Nandakumar finished off the contest, defeating Olga Gaistruk, 7-5, 6-0.
Nataliya Bredikhina salvaged a win for the Terps at No. 4, fighting off some tense moments in the second set to claim a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Maryland retakes the court next Saturday against Virginia. Play is scheduled to begin at noon.
