COLLEGE PARK, Md. – More than 60 former Maryland men's basketball players return to College Park this weekend to take part in the program's annual alumni reunion weekend.
“We've had a tremendous turnout,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “We had over 60 alumni celebrate the weekend with us. We're very appreciative of their support and enthusiasm for Maryland basketball. It was a great weekend to share stories and get everyone together prior to the start of the season.”
The festivities began Friday with a golf outing and a gathering at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. The alumni and coaches will be recognized at halftime during Maryland football's game against West Virginia tomorrow.
The 2002 National Championship team is represented by Juan Dixon, Chris Wilcox and Drew Nicholas this weekend. Dixon, who serves as a special assistant to the head coach for Maryland basketball, holds numerous Terp records, including career points (2,269), and was named the 2002 NCAA Final Four MVP. Wilcox has spent 11 seasons in the NBA.
"I had so much fun being back with the guys," said Wilcox. "I haven't seen Terence Morris in years and just to catch up with him and so many others reminded me of the many great moments I experienced here at Maryland."
"We have such a strong brotherhood and bond," added Dixon. "It was a tremendous turnout and a wonderful weekend for all of us to be a part of."
Nicholas, who is most well-known for “The Shot” in the 2003 NCAA Tournament, played for 10 years overseas before beginning a broadcasting career stateside. Nicholas was added as a Big Ten Network analyst earlier in the month.
Other notable alumni in town include Len Elmore, who is first all-time in career rebounding average (12.2 rpg) and career rebounds (1,053) and Walt Williams, who is first in the Maryland record books in season points (776).
