Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland field hockey team held possession through much of a tight contest with No. 2 North Carolina, but the Terrapins struggled to score and fell to the Tar Heels, 3-1, Friday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
North Carolina capitalized on its few offensive opportunities to take the early lead. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Maryland came out reenergized in the second half but the Terrapins' rally ultimately fell short.
The Tar Heels got onto the board with a score from Charlotte Craddock off a penalty corner in the fifth minute. They would hold onto the 1-0 lead through the first half.
North Carolina made it a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute. Loren Shealy cracked a shot that was saved, then sent in a shot off the rebound for the score. The Tar Heels went up 3-0 with 3:20 remaining when Julia Young scored off a rebounded shot.
A minute later, senior Steffi Schneid scored on Maryland first and only corner of the day off a setup from junior Anna Dessoye and senior Maxine Fluharty.
The Terps (2-1) had just the one penalty corner on the day to the Tar Heels' five. North Carolina outshot Maryland, 14-8.
Next, Maryland will host Miami (Ohio) (0-2) Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Admission and parking are both free for Sunday's contest.
