
Maryland Battles in Loss to #16 Wisconsin

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Playing its second ranked opponent in as many nights, the Maryland volleyball team fell to No. 16 Wisconsin, 3-0 (20-25, 19-25, 20-25) Saturday night in the XFINITY Center Pavilion.
“I thought we played a pretty good match,” head coach Steve Aird said. “I think our freshmen are playing at a high level right now. I was proud of the way that this team stuck with it and kept fighting. Wisconsin is one of the best teams in the country, so congrats to them on a good match.”
Senior outside hitter Adreené Elliott and freshman outside hitter led the Terps with 10 kills each while Twilley hit .421 in the match. Fellow freshman Angel Gaskin made nine kills on .562 hitting while freshman libero Kelsey Wicinski served two aces. Hailey Murray, Ashlyn MacGregor and Whitney Craigo each posted two blocks.
Maryland (10-9, 0-5 B1G) stuck with Wisconsin (12-4, 4-2) before a 4-0 Badger run gave them a 9-5 lead. Elliott notched a kill and served an ace before a Twilley kill pulled the Terps within four, 16-12. A 3-0 run for Maryland, forced a Wisconsin timeout at 21-18. After another Elliott kill, the Badgers finished the set at 25-20 with a block.
Four straight kills from Lauryn Gillis helped Wisconsin build a 7-3 lead in set two. The Terps notched four of the next five points to pull within one point. A kill from Murray again put Maryland within one at 15-14. Twilley notched two late kills but the Badgers finished the set on a 3-0 run to win, 25-19.
Kills from Gaskin and Elliott helped Maryland early in the third set before Wisconsin took a 9-5 lead. A block from MacGregor and Craigo helped the Terps pull within one at 9-8. Twilley posted three kills as Maryland hung with the visitors. The Badgers pulled ahead to a 22-16 lead before kills from Murray and Elliott forced a Wisconsin timeout. Abigail Bentz notched a late kill before two straight points ended the set, 25-20, for the Badgers.
Led by Gaskin and Twilley, the Terps hit .262 in the match, including a .367 clip in the first set.
Lauryn Gillis led Wisconsin with 12 kills as the Badgers hit .390 as a team. Reigning Big Ten Player and Setter of the Year Lauren Carlini posted 40 kills, four service aces and four blocks versus Maryland.
The Terps have a quick turnaround as they travel to Michigan State and Michigan for mid-week matches on Wednesday and Thursday.
