SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – Maryland men's basketball freshman Diamond Stone has been named to the 2015-16 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award watch list, the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame announced Friday.
A McDonald's All-American, Stone is rated as a consensus top 10 player by a myriad of national recruiting services and is arguably one of the highest-rated recruits to join Maryland. Stone starred at Dominican High School in Milwaukee, Wisc., where he led his high school team to four straight state championships and as a senior averaged 24.4 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. He established a Wisconsin state record with 14 blocked shots in the 2012 state semifinal and also finished the game with a triple-double, notching 15 points, 15 rebounds and 14 blocks. Stone was also named Wisconsin Associated Press Player of the Year as a senior.
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players will be narrowed to 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to the selection committee with the winner being announced at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show live from Club Nokia in Los Angeles on April 8.
