• Maryland won a school-record 26 games during the regular season a year ago while making its return to the NCAA Tournament in 2015 after a four-year hiatus.
• The Terps' No. 3 ranking in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls is the highest for a Terrapin team in the preaseason since 2001-02.
• Head coach Mark Turgeon was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2015. Turgeon led Maryland to 28 wins in 2015, an 11-game improvement from its 17 victories in the 2013-14 season, a mark that ranked second among schools in the Power Five conferences.
• Assistant coach Bino Ranson played for Southern New Hampshire in the late 90s and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2007. He finished his career with 1,899 points.
trimble named b1g preseason player of the year
• Sophomore point guard
Melo Trimble has been named the 2015-16 Preseason Big Ten Conference Player of the Year. In addition, Trimble joined senior forward
Jake Layman on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team.
• Trimble, who is the first Terrapin to nab conference preseason player of the year honors since Terence Morris in 1999-00, was a First Team All-Big Ten pick as a freshman last season. Trimble started in all 35 games for the Terps, leading Maryland in scoring (16.2 ppg), assists (106) and steals (44). The Upper Marlboro, Md., product was also a Sporting News Second Team All-American and USBWA Freshman All-American. Trimble was one of four unanimous selections on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team.
• Layman was named an All-Big Ten Third Team selection a year ago. The Wrentham, Mass., native boasted 29 double-figure scoring games a year ago while ranking in the top 25 in the conference in scoring (12.5 ppg), field goal percentage (.470) and rebounding (5.8 rpg). He scored his 1,000th point at Maryland last March and is 15 rebounds shy of 500 for his career.
STONE NAMED TO KAREEM ABDUl-jabbar watch list
• Maryland men's basketball freshman Diamond Stone has been named to the 2015-16 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award watch list, the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame announced.
• A McDonald's All-American, Stone is rated as a consensus top 10 player by a myriad of national recruiting services and is arguably one of the highest-rated recruits to join Maryland. Stone starred at Dominican High School in Milwaukee, Wisc., where he led his high school team to four straight state championships and as a senior averaged 24.4 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. He established a Wisconsin state record with 14 blocked shots in the 2012 state semifinal and also finished the game with a triple-double, notching 15 points, 15 rebounds and 14 blocks. Stone was also named Wisconsin Associated Press Player of the Year as a senior.
Trio of terps land on national watch lists
• Senior forward Jake Layman, senior guard Rasheed Sulaimon, and sophomore guard Melo Trimble have been named to a trio of national watch lists at their respective positions, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced.
• Layman was tabbed to the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year list after being named an All-Big Ten selection in 2015. The Wrentham, Mass., native boasted 29 double-figure scoring games a year ago while ranking in the top 25 in the conference in scoring (12.5 ppg), field goal percentage (.470) and rebounding (5.8 rpg).
• Sulaimon is one of 20 candidates for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year award. The Houston, Texas, native averaged 10 points and 2.7 rebounds per game during his three-year stint at Duke prior to transferring to the University of Maryland for his senior campaign.
