CHICAGO – Maryland sophomore guard Melo Trimble was named Big Ten Conference Co-Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Trimble scored a season-high 25 points to lift the Terps past UConn in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native notched a 14-for-15 performance from the charity stripe and is only the second player to pick up 15 or more free throw attempts against the Huskies since 2010. The Terps are 17-1 when Trimble gets to the line at least seven times.
Trimble also scored a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including a 4-of-4 output from beyond the three-point line, and dished out four assists against just one turnover in 28 minutes of action versus Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday.
The Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year shot .625 from the field on the week.
It is the second Big Ten weekly honor for Trimble and the first for a Terrapin this season.
Maryland – which is 9-1 on the year - heads to Baltimore for a game against Princeton on Saturday at Royal Farms Arena at 7 p.m.
