
Terps Head South For 'Strike Out Cancer' Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland softball team returns to the diamond this weekend for a five-game stint at the ninth annual FAU 'Strike Out Cancer' tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. The Terps (3-2, 0-0 B1G) will look to build off their successful opening weekend as they take on Providence, Drexel, #24 Tulsa, and Florida Atlantic.
Maryland opens the tournament on Friday with a morning-afternoon double header against Providence at 11:15 a.m. and Drexel at 1:30 p.m. The team then faces its first ranked opponent of the season with #24 Tulsa at 9:00 a.m. and a re-match with Drexel at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament wraps up with a bout with host team Florida Atlantic at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Last time out
- The Terps started the season 3-2 last weekend at the Kickin' Chicken Classic on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. The team registered wins against Providence and Coastal Carolina.
- Sophomore Hannah Dewey helped propel the Terrapins from the plate, hitting .667, along with a .778 on base percentage, both leading the Big Ten. She racked up eight hits, one RBI, and three extra-base hits in 12 at-bats with a .917 slugging percentage through five games.
- Corey Schwartz and Mandy Gardner both added eight RBIs for the Terps as well.
- Kaitlyn Schmeiser dominated the pitchers circle going 2-1 with a 2.80 ERA. She pitched two complete games and struck out 19 over the course of the weekend.
- Coach Scott Deifel received the game ball in her first career win as head coach, an 8-2 victory over Lafayette.
Scouting Florida Atlantic
- Host Florida Atlantic University started the season 4-1 in the FAU 'Kick-off Classic.' The Owls picked up wins against Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Penn State and LIU Brooklyn. The team dropped its only contest of the season to Kansas.
- The Owls are coming off a 33-22 2014 campaign, with a 15-9 conference record.
- Head coach Joan Joyce has been coaching the Owls since 1994, and is the only head coach in Florida Atlantic softball history.
- Sunday's match-up marks the 12th meeting between the two programs. FAU currently holds a 7-4 all-time series record.
Scouting Tulsa
- The Golden Hurricane opened their 2015 season going 4-1 at the GCU Kickoff in Phoenix, Ariz. Tulsa picked up wins against Santa Clara and Grand Canyon.
- The team currently ranks number 24 in the nation.
- Tulsa is coming off of a 53-9 2014 campaign, with a 19-4 conference record.
- Senior Erica Sampson was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week after hitting .412 with six RBIs.
- This weekend's meeting marks the second all-time meeting between the two programs. Maryland currently holds a 1-0 advantage.
Scouting Providence
- The Friars open their 2015 campaign this weekend at the 'Strike Out Cancer' tournament. Providence is coming off a 6-29 2014 season, with a 4-15 conference record.
- Kiki Bladassari and Danielle Deraney were named to the preseason All-BIG EAST team by College Sports Madness.
- Head coach Kerri Jacklets is entering her tenth season at the helm of the Providence softball team.
- This weekend's match-up marks the first-ever meeting between the Friars and the Terrapins.
Scouting Drexel
- The Dragons open their 2015 campaign this weekend at the 'Strike Out Cancer' tournament. Drexel is coming off a 17-27 2014 season, with a 4-14 conference record.
- Carl Taylor was recently named interim head coach of the Drexel Dragons softball program.
- This weekend's meeting marks the eighth meeting between the two programs. Maryland currently holds a 5-2 all-time advantage.
Schmeiser Moves up all-time strikeout list
Kaitlyn Schmeiser dominating the pitchers circle this weekend, pitching two complete games and striking out 19 over the course of the weekend. The 19 strikeouts move her into ninth for all-time strikeouts in program history with 292.Dewey's Day
The Temecula, Calif. native started all five games this past weekend in the Kickin' Chicken Classic and helped propel the Terps (3-2, 0-0 B1G) to three wins. Through the weekend, Dewey hit .667, along with a .778 on base percentage, both leading the Big Ten.
