BOCA RATON, Fla.—Maryland's pitching staff continued its dominant weekend as the Maryland softball team split a morning-afternoon double header against #22 Tulsa and Drexel. The Terps (6-3, 0-0 B1G) fell to Tulsa 1-0 in the morning game and defeated Drexel 3-1 in the afternoon game.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched a total 10 and two-thirds innings today, yielding only five total hits and striking out 15. Hannah Dewey added two and a third innings of no-hit ball in the victory over Drexel.
The Terps return to the diamond tomorrow to face host Florida Atlantic at 1:30 p.m. Tomorrow's game marks the final game for the Terps in the FAU 'Strike Out Cancer' tournament. Live stats for the game can be found HERE.
Game One
A pitchers dual, Maryland and Tulsa traded scoreless innings until Tulsa scored in the bottom of the fourth off its only two hits of the game. Kaitlyn Schmeiser retired the first 10 batters of the game before allowing the fourth inning hits.
The Terps bats were quiet, only racking up two hits—an infield single by Kaitlyn Schmeiser in the top of the third and an infield single by Lindsey Schmeiser in the top of the sixth.
In the third, the Terps had runners at first and second off a Schmeiser hit, a Tulsa error and a fielder's choice, but could not bring the runners home. In the sixth, Lindsey Schmeiser moved into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt by Juli Strange, but the ensuing batters flied out and grounded out respectively.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser had a complete-game, two-hit, eight strikeout game for Maryland from the mound.
Game Two
Maryland's bats awoke in the second game of the day, as the pitching remained dominant. A highlight reel defensive play by Bridget Hawvermale highlighted the top of the second as Maryland and Drexel remained scoreless until a sacrifice bunt by Juli Strange scored Kylie Datil in the bottom of the third, 1-0 Terps. The scorching hot Hannah Dewey added another RBI single, slapping one to center to bring Schmeiser home to make it 2-0 Maryland.
Drexel would cut the lead in half with a homer to left in the top of the fourth. That would be all the offense the Dragons would get as Kaitlyn Schmeiser, in relief for Hannah Dewey would shut Drexel out the remainder of the game.
Maryland would threaten with runners in scoring position in the fifth, but would finally add their insurance run off a RBI single, ninth of her season, from Mandy Gardner, scoring Sarah Calta from second to make it 3-1.
Hannah Dewey started the game, pitching a scoreless two and a third innings, before Kaitlyn Schmeiser took over for the final four and two thirds outing, getting the win. Schmeiser pitched a one run, three-hit, seven strikeout performance. RBI machine Mandy Gardner went 2-for-3 with one RBI from the plate and Hannah Dewey added a 1-for-2, one RBI performance from the plate as well.
