CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—For the second time in as many games, the Maryland softball team won in walk-off fashion against Nevada, late Friday evening. Juli Strange lined a RBI single up in the middle in the bottom of the eighth to give the Terrapins a 4-3 victory in the second day of competition at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The win moves the Terps to 8-5 on the season.
Nevada got on the board first, with one run in the second inning and two in the third off five hits to take an early three run lead. Kaitlyn Schmeiser entered the game on the mound in the fourth and dominated the rest of the game, keeping Maryland within striking distance. Schmeiser would retire every better she faced in five innings, striking out nine.
The Terrapin bats remained quiet through six as Nevada would take its 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Juli Strange would lead off with a walk and advance to third on a wild pitch. Down three with two outs, Kaitlyn Schmeiser started the rally with a seven-pitch walk, coming back from a 0-2 count. Lindsey Schmeiser would follow up with a walk of her own to load the bases. Erin Pronobis drove in the first Maryland run after getting hit by a pitch. Maryland's leading hitter, Hannah Dewey, would follow with a two-RBI single up the middle to tie the game at three sending the game to extra innings.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser retired Nevada in order in the top of the eighth, Maryland's first batter Juli Strange would hit the walk-off single, scoring Skylynne Ellazar who was on second due to the international tie breaker, to win the game.
Maryland will return to action tomorrow to wrap up the Mary Nutter Classic with two games; a 3:30 (EST) start vs. UNLV and an 11:00 (EST) first pitch vs. Long Beach State.
