ORLANDO, Fla.— Lindsey Schmeiser hit a sacrifice fly to help propel the Maryland softball team to a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Fordham in the first game of a double header split today. The Terps dropped the second decision to Mississippi State, 6-2, in the afternoon.
With the split, Maryland moves to 11-6 on the season. The nine inning victory over the Rams moves the Terps to 4-0 in extra innings.
Game One
The Rams struck first, putting across a run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Erin Pronobis responded, launching her team-leading third home run of the season to knot the game at one in the fourth.
Three straight singles in the bottom of the fourth with no outs loaded the bases for Fordham, but solid defense by the Terps outfield held the Rams scoreless.
Fordham took a 2-1 lead into the final half-frame, but an error in the bottom of the seventh scored Bridget Hawvermale to tie the game.
In extra innings, a wild pitch brought a Fordham run in the top of the eighth, but the Terps did not quit. In the bottom of the eighth, a bases-loaded RBI walk from Shannon Bustillos tied the ball game at three.
Hannah Dewey made a shoe-string catch in center, catching the Fordam runner off-base for an unassisted double play in the top of the ninth. Kyile Datil advanced to third on a pass ball, as Lindsey Schmeiser hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser picked up the victory from the mound, pitching six and two thirds innings allowing one earned run, and striking out two.
Game Two
The Terrapins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after a couple of Mississippi State errors in the third and a Mandy Gardner home run in the fourth. The solo shot marked Gardner's team-leading fourth home run of the season and conference-leading 22nd RBI.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the fourth after a RBI double scored the runner from first. Lindsey Schmeiser contained the damage, scaling the outfield wall preventing a Bulldog grand slam. MSU eventually tied the game after an Alexis Silkwood solo home run in the fifth.
Maryland put runners on base in the sixth, but could not capitalize, as in the bottom of the sixth, Mississippi State knocked in a bases-loaded, three RBI double to talk a 5-2 lead. They would add an additional run off a RBI single to extend their lead to 6-2.
The Terps are back in action tomorrow for a double header against Lehigh and James Madison. The bout with Lehigh is scheduled to start at 1:15 p.m., while the James Madison game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
