COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women's tennis team will play two matches in Texas this weekend. The Terps (1-2, 0-0 Big Ten) take on Stephen F. Austin at 11 a.m., Saturday before facing No. 6 Baylor at 1 p.m., on Sunday.
Head coach Daria Panova's squad returns after a 5-2 loss to No. 74 William & Mary. The Terps defeated Georgia State in their opening match of the season before losing to No. 2 Florida and the Tribe.
Maryland's No. 1 sophomore Alexandra Stanova is 1-1 on the season after a win against Georgia State and a loss in the match with the Tribe. Stanova also pairs with sophomore Olivia Gaudreault to form the Terps' 48th-ranked doubles pair.
Junior Nataliya Bredikhina is the Terps' No. 2 singles starter coming off a strong campaign last season. She also picked up a win against Georgia State, as did senior Welma Luus, who has paired with Bredikhina in the Terps' No. 1 doubles team.
The singles wins against William & Mary came from junior Olga Bredikhina and freshman Ekaterina Tour. The freshman combines with sophomore Kristina Hovsepyan to be Maryland's final doubles team so far this season.
Stephen F. Austin sports a 2-1 record this season, with its last win coming against Dallas Baptist. The Ladyjacks boast the 2-1 doubles tandem of Dhanielly Quevedo and Malena Gordo at No. 1 and Quevedo has been the squad's best single players so far with a record of 2-0 between No. 4 and No. 5.
The sixth-ranked Bears enters Sunday's showdown undefeated at 6-0. Top singles player Ema Burgic is 4-0 this season and is the 72nd-ranked player in the country. No. 73 Kelley Anderson and No. 101 Rachael James-Baker join Burgic to give Baylor a solid punch at the top of the lineup.
