CONWAY, S.C.—The Maryland softball team swept a morning-afternoon double header against Costal Carolina today in the final day of competition at the Kickin' Chicken Classic. The Terps (3-2, 0-0 B1G) defeated the Chanticleers 3-1 in the morning game, and 4-3 in eight innings in the afternoon game.
“It was exciting. It was a great team effort,” Head coach Courtney Scott Deifel said, “This is a great group of girls and a great weekend to start the season.”
Hannah Dewey, Juli Strange and Mandy Gardner were named to the Kickin' Chicken Classic All-Tournament team.
The Terps were led by Hannah Dewey, who through the weekend, hit .667 with eight hits, five runs and one RBI. She currently has a .778 on base percentage in 12 at-bats. Corey Schwartz and Mandy Gardner both lead the Terps with eight RBIs each. Kaitlyn Schmeiser dominating the pitchers circle going 2-1 with a 2.80 ERA. She pitched two complete games and struck out 19 over the course of the weekend. The 19 strikeouts move her into ninth for all-time strikeouts in program history with 292.
The Terrapins are back in action next weekend for a five game stint in Boca Raton, Fla., for the FAU 'Strike-Out Cancer' Tournament. The team will play Providence, Drexel, Tulsa and Florida Atlantic. The tournament starts on Friday with a double header against Providence and Drexel, followed by another double header against Tulsa and Drexel on Saturday. They conclude their weekend on Sunday against host team Florida Atlantic.
First Game
Maryland struck first after an RBI single by Lindsey Schmeiser drove in Juli Strange from second in the top of the first. The Terps kept Coastal Carolina scoreless until the Chanticleers knotted the score at one through five.
A RBI double by Lindsey Schmeiser and a RBI single from Shannon Bustillos combined with stellar defense and pitching from Hannah Dewey helped the team shut the door in their 3-1 victory.
Dewey dominated from the mound, tossing a complete game, four hit, five strikeout performance. Lindsey Schmeiser led the team from the batters box going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Juli Strange went 2-for-3 from the plate as well, The team totaled three runs on six hits.
Second Game
The momentum carried over from the first game for Lindsey Schmeiser as she smacked her first home run of the season at the top of the first to give the Terps a 1-0 lead. Coastal Carolina responded with an RBI double to tie the game at one after two.
The teams exchanged a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth inning as well as the sixth and seventh. With the game tied at 3-3, Mandy Gardner hit the go-ahead RBI single to make it 4-3, Maryland. K. Schmeiser shut the door, pitching the complete game in the win.
