CHICAGO (AP) — Freshman Melo Trimble scored a game-high 22 points but No. 3 seed Michigan State utilized a strong second half to defeat No. 2 seed Maryland, 62-58, Saturday in the Big Ten tournament semifinals.

Dez Wells posted his 13th consecutive double-figure scoring performance with 10 points despite picking up two early fouls and Evan Smotrycz added nine points on a trio of three-pointers.

Travis Trice scored 20 points, Branden Dawson added 17 points and eight rebounds for Michigan State.

The Terrapins (27-6) led Michigan State (23-10) by as much as 16 in the first half in the third meeting between the two teams this season. Maryland won the previous two meetings, a 68-66 double-overtime showdown in East Lansing and a decisive 75-59 victory at XFINITY Center.

Trimble got off to a blistering start for Maryland, hitting his first five shots and scoring 13 points as the Terrapins jumped out to a 23-7 lead. The Spartans went on a 9-0 run to pull within five with 4:30 left in the half, with Trice hitting a 3 from the left corner to make it 25-20 after Matt Costello grabbed an offensive rebound and passed to him.

"I'm proud of my team — 27 wins now," head coach Mark Turgeon said. "We're looking forward to what lies ahead."

It was 48-all when Gavin Schilling hit a free throw and dunked to give Michigan State a three-point lead with 3:44 left. That started a decisive 9-2 spurt.

Dawson had a dunk before Lourawls Nairn Jr. hit one of two free throws to make it 57-50 with 1:31 remaining.

Maryland – which saw its eight-game winning streak snapped Saturday – will discover its NCAA Tournament destination when the bracket is announced Sunday night.
