COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's basketball team earned the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region and will face No. 13 seed Valparaiso in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at Nationwide Arena. The game - which will be shown on TNT - is slated to tip off 30 minutes following the West Virginia/Buffalo game at 2:10 p.m. EST.
The eighth-ranked Terps – who posted a school-record 26 wins in the regular season – are making their return to the dance after a four-year hiatus.
Maryland has 19 postseason appearances in the last 22 years, including 11 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1993-2004. The Terps have advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen seven times in the last 20 years, including consecutive trips to the NCAA Final Four in 2001 and 2002. The Terps captured the NCAA National Championship in 2002.
Maryland is 1-0 all-time against Valpo, which went 28-5 and won the Horizon League championship with a 54-44 win against Green Bay in the title game. The Terps won the lone meeting between the two programs, 82-60, on March 11, 1999 in the NCAA Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
Should the Terps win on Friday, they will face the winner of No. 5 seed West Virginia/No. 12 Buffalo on Sunday.
