ROSEMONT, Ill. – After helping the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team to two dominant wins last week, redshirt senior Alex Fitzpatrick and freshman Megan Whittle received Big Ten weekly honors, as announced by the conference Monday.
Fitzpatrick was named the Defensive Player of the Week after limiting two opponents to six goals or less last week. The goalkeeper held Towson to just two goals – both of which came in the first half – last Wednesday while setting a season high with 10 saves. In a 16-6 win over No. 7 Florida, Fitzpatrick made a season-high four ground balls while making seven saves. She allowed only six goals – nearly 10 less than Florida was averaging per game.
On the season, Fitzpatrick is averaging 6.11 goals per game and a .539 save percentage. She leads the Big Ten in both categories, and is ranked sixth nationally in goals per game and fifth in the country in save percentage.
Whittle was named the Freshman of the Week after breaking out with six goals against Towson. Her six tallies came on seven shots, and she also grabbed a ground ball in the contest. Against the Gators, Whittle recorded a hat trick, her fourth of the season. She has recorded multiple-goal games in all but one contest this season.
Whittle is second on the team with 21 goals and 22 points this year.
This is the second time this season Fitzpatrick and Whittle have earned their respective honors.
The Terps (7-0) host No. 11 Penn (6-0) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network – the first-ever lacrosse game on BTN.
