IOWA CITY, Iowa—The Maryland softball team plated a season-high 19 runs off 14 hits en route to a 19-0 run-rule victory over Iowa on Sunday. With the victory, Maryland takes the series from the Hawkeyes and moves to 19-12 on the season and 2-1 in the Big Ten.
In the team's first Big Ten series victory, Maryland totaled 38 runs off 38 hits. Senior Shannon Bustillos led the way, going 8-for-12 with seven RBIs and two home runs.
Pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser (13-5) picked up the victory in the circle, tossing the complete-game two-hit shutout while striking out two. With the two strikeouts, K. Schmeiser now has 110 on the season and 383 for her career, moving the Dunkirk, Md. native into sixth on the all-time strikeout list.
Maryland struck first, racking eight runs in the first inning. Erin Pronobis hit her second grand slam of the series, driving in Lindsey Schmeiser, Hannah Dewey and Corey Schwartz. A K. Schmeiser double drove in an additional two runs. Juli Strange and Dewey racked RBI singles to close out the first with an 8-0 lead.
With two-outs in the second, the Terrapins picked up an additional seven runs. The Hawkeyes would walk in two runs, while a Schwartz single knocked in two more runs. Both K. Schmeiser and Bustillos recorded a RBI single extending the Maryland lead to 15-0 after two.
In the third, L. Schmeiser doubled in a run and Schwartz added a run on a grounder to short, further extending the lead to 17-0.
In the final frame, Maryland added a final two runs, as both Pronobis and Bustillos drew RBI walks.
The Terrapin defense held Iowa scoreless, yielding only two hits all game.
The Terps return to the diamond on Wednesday for a double-header against Dartmouth at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. in the Maryland Softball Stadium.
