COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland track and field team hosted the 2015 Maryland Invitational Saturday at Kehoe Track in the team's first home, outdoor meet of the season.
The Terps competed against schools from across the Mid-Atlantic region, including Howard, Johns Hopkins, Shippensburg, Seton Hill and Rochester, as well as unattached competitors. Maryland won the men's competiton with 152 points and dominated the women's field to the tune of 212.50 points.
Women's Competition
Maryland's women's team was spectacular Saturday, racking up 212.50 points to pace the competition.
Senior Amber Melville won the high jump with Izzy Laurel finishing in second place. Melville jumped 5'9 3/4” for the win.
In the throws, Chioma Onyekwere won the shot put with a toss of 48'1.25" She also took second in the hammer throw. Claudia Ababio won the discus with a mark of 140'01" with Onyekwere taking second.
The Terps kicked off the day in a strong manner with sophomore Charde' Barnes taking first place and junior Katie Nappi taking third in the 3000m steeplechase.
The 400m saw Dominque Davis notch a third-place finish in 58.53.
In the 800m, Maryland swept the top three spots, with Maeve McCoy winning the title. Shade Pratt and Charlotte Staver finished second and third, respectively.
In the women's 5000m, freshman Erin Causey finished ninth, followed by sophomore Karah O'Halloran in tenth out of 23 competitors.
Senior Myah Hicks placed fifth in the women's 1500m run and senior Maeve McCoy finished twelfth out of 48 runners.
Sophomore Taylor Tucker took the title in the women's 100m hurdles to contribute to the dominant day for the Terps. Noella Anyangwe finished second.
Tucker returned in the 400m hurdles and took second behind Alexandra Ciminio, who won the event in 1:03.79.
Maryland's 4x400m relay team of Davis, Hicks, Tucker and Pratt won the event to complete a dominant day for Maryland.
Men's Competition
Maryland's men's squad dominated the field with 152 point to win the overall team title.
Pat Cole followed his sensational performance at UTEP last week with a title in the hammer throw. Cole notched a mark of 186'01".
Freshman Diego Lyon (14.65) and sophomore Clyde Gross (14.92) went 1-2 in the 110m hurdles. Gross won the 200m in a time of 22.51.
In the high jump, freshman Josh Landsman took first place with a final jump of 6'6 over competitors from Penn and Howard.
Derek Holland continued the Terps' nice performance in the jumps with a victory in the triple jump.
Sophomore Dan Trettel took first place in the men's 1500m run out of 52 competitors and sophomore Tom Hogarty was not far behind, finishing sixth. Trettel also won the 800m in 1:54.58.
In the 3000m, Lou Corgliano won the event in 8:42.65 with Kikanae Punyua placing third.
Sophomore Trey Sherman placed third in the men's 100m dash.
In the relays, Maryland men's 4x400m team of Alex Leto, Brandon Thompson, Paul Joseph and Lionel Wilson took the title in 3:22.03.
The Terps will travel to both Princeton and Florida on Apr. 3 to participate in the Princeton Invitational and Florida Relays, respectively.
