COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The No. 44 Maryland women's tennis team were edged out by Wisconsin by a score of 3-4, on Saturday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Terps drop to 9-8 on the season and 3-3 in their conference.
Welma Luus and Ekaterina Tour defeated Wisconsin doubles pair Lauren Chypyha and Maria Avgerinos, 8-2. The Badgers responded in the lower spots with Kelsey Grambeau and Lauren Burich topping Terps Olivia Gaudreault and Cassandre Thebault, 8-3. To clinch the doubles point for the Badgers, Sydney Rider and Ekaterina Stepanova edged a 8-3 victory over Olga and Nataliya Bredikhina.
Singles play started with Maryland wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions putting the Terps ahead by one point. Nataliya Bredikhina won a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Wisconsin's Avegerinos, while Burich fell to Luus by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Grambeau tied the score at 2-2 with a tight win over Thebault, 7-5, 6-2. Wisconsin gained a 3-2 lead when Gaudreault lost a 6-4, 7-6(3) battle against Rider.
Olga Bredikhina kept the Terps in the running with a 7-6(2), 7-6(2), win over Stepanova. Chypyha outlasted Tour 6-0, 6-7(3), 7-5 on court one, sealing the win for the Badgers.
Maryland hosts No. 69 Minnesota on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for noon.
