Cummings Leads #1 Terps Past Georgetown, 12-3

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Vaulted by Taylor Cummings' nine points, the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team (11-0) took down Georgetown (2-8), 12-3, Wednesday evening at the Multi-Sport Complex.

Cummings' impressive outing included four goals, five assists, five ground balls, six draw controls and three caused turnovers. Megan Whittle also scored four times while Brooke Griffin notched two goals and Zoe Stukenberg and Taylor Hensh each scored once.

“We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but once we were able to figure out what we were doing, we were able to finish some of our shots,” said head coach Cathy Reese. “We played great defense, but it took us a little while to get settled into our offense.”

The Terps got a few good looks early in the game but were unable to find the back of the net. Stukenberg finally broke the drought at 16:52 off an assist from Cummings. The Hoyas tied the game at 12:24, but Griffin was able to score in front of the crease at 11:46.

After another scoreless interlude, McPartland found Whittle through traffic at 3:11. Cummings was able to take her own rebound on a free-position attempt and score at 2:39. The Terps took a 5-1 lead into halftime.

Cummings fought through the defense and scored at 27:00 to start the second half. Whittle nailed a hard shot past the goalie at 23:53 and scored again at 23:53 off a pass from Cummings as the Terps pushed their lead to 8-1.

The Hoyas scored off a rebound at 21:26, but Whittle finished her hat trick on a cross-body shot at 20:22. Cummings' shot rolled past the keeper at 18:47 and the Terps took a 10-2 lead. Georgetown got another goal at 12:23, but Cummings was able to score a top-shelf goal at 11:57 as the Terps took an 11-3 lead. Hensh finished the scoring at 7:41, and Maryland took its 11th win of the season.

Goalkeeper Alex Fitzpatrick made six saves in the game.

The Terps held a 29-19 shot advantage and a 24-10 advantage in ground balls. Maryland took a 13-4 lead in the draw circle.

The Terrapins host their first-ever Big Ten home game Saturday against Rutgers. Opening draw is scheduled for noon.
