
Wrestling Holds Annual Awards Banquet

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland wrestling team celebrated the 2014-15 season at its annual awards banquet at Heritage Hall in the XFINITY Center Sunday afternoon.
Redshirt junior Lou Mascola won the John C. McHugh Outstanding Wrestling of the Year Award. The 157-pounder qualified for his first NCAA Championships and earned the Fastest Fall Award at the Midlands Championships.
Mascola also took home the Most Improved Award.
Senior Spencer Myers captured the Kevin R. Kearns Award, given to the senior wrestler who has contributed the most to wrestling at Maryland. The Selinsgrove, Pa., native advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships this season after playing football in the fall.
Freshman Alfred Bannister earned two honors; Redshirt of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Bannister put together a fabulous debut campaign, racking up 35 wins and leading the team in falls with 10.
Senior Frank Goodwin nabbed the 11th Man Award while junior Josh Polacek captured the Tom Norris Unsung Hero Award. Polacek moved down to 125 pounds in his final season and won six times.
The Curt Callahan Mental Toughness Award went to Geoffrey Alexander, who fought through injury to earn his third career bid to the NCAA Championships.
Maryland's captains, Ben Dorsay and Tony Gardner, were also honored for their contributions. The pair, along with Myers, Goodwin, Polacek, Rob Fitzgerald, Sean O'Malley, TJ Guidice and team manager Arlin Delgado delivered senior speeches to the attendees.
The awards were based on voting from the coaching staff and student-athletes.
