Schmeiser Shines As Terps Celebrate Senior Day

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched a six-hit complete game, fanning three batters as the Maryland softball team fell 1-0, off an unearned run, to #4 Michigan on Sunday.

"I'm incredibly proud of the way Kaitlyn pitched today," Head coach Courtney Scott Deifel said after the game. "She laid it all on the line for us today and gave us a chance to win. I'm very happy with our effort."

In the final home game of the regular season, the Terps (26-24, 8-12 Big Ten) honored and recognized the accomplishments of its seven seniors prior to first pitch.

A true pitcher's duel, K. Schmeiser and Michigan's Megan Besta had a combined zero earned runs and 18 strikeouts while yielding only six total hits.

The two pitchers starting strong, retiring their respective sides in order in the first inning.

In the top of the second, Michigan got two base runners off a hit and error, but could not convert. In the bottom of the frame, the Terrapins put Erin Pronobis on base after a walk, but could not bring her home either.

After a quiet third, Kelly Christner led off the fourth with a double, advancing to third on an error. Kelsey Susalla drove Christner home for the only score of the game with an RBI single. K. Schmeiser limited the damage, retiring the next three batters.

In the sixth, Mandy Gardner drew a walk, the second base runner for Maryland, but did not advance, as the Terrapins were held hitless on the day by Betsa.

Despite pitching a gem, K. Schmeiser (18-9) took the loss.

Overall, Maryland averaged 428 fans per game, a new team attendance record.

The team closes out the regular season next weekend as they travel to Michigan State for a three game series with the Spartans.
