COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Jamal Wade went 3-for-3 with a double, but the No. 16 Maryland baseball team fell 12-1 to George Washington Wednesday night at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
The Terrapins (23-8, 7-2) and Colonials were tied after two frames before the away team scored four in the fourth. Freshman Brandon Lowe and junior Kevin Martir both notched two hits.
After a Colonial run in the second, Maryland responded with a run of its own in the bottom half. Junior Anthony Papio singled to start the inning before Wade singled. Freshman Justin Morris then hit a sac fly to drive in Papio and tie the score.
George Washington blew the game open with four runs in the in the third off Maryland starter Willie Rios. The Colonials nabbed one more in the fourth to make it a 6-1 game.
The Terps threatened in the fourth, but freshman Kengo Kawahara struck out with men on second and third to end the inning.
After scoring two runs in the sixth, George Washington plated four runs in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Maryland returns to action for a three-game series against Iowa this weekend. Game one is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday.
