Terrapins Return Home To Face Illini

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—After taking two games in Indiana last weekend, the Maryland softball team returns home to tackle a three-game series against Illinois. With the two victories in Champaign, the Terps moved to 23-16 on the season and 5-4 in Big Ten play.

The Terrapins offense exploded for 35 runs during the series, including a season-high 21 run outburst in the rubber game of the bouts. Shannon Bustillos led Maryland from the plate, hitting .615 with a 1.077 slugging percentage and .643 on-base percentage. Additionally, Bustillos accounted for four extra-base hits and drove in eight runs.

  • Last time out, the Illini took a mid-week interlude from Indiana State, 5-4. Previously, Illinois took two of three against Iowa. They lost the first game 15-7, but triumphed 15-7 and 12-7 in the second and third games, respectively.
  • Allie Bauch leads the Fighting Illini from the plate with a .398 batting average, with 13 doubles, seven home runs and 23 RBIs.

Streaking Schmeiser

  • Junior Lindsey Schmeiser is currently on a 16 game hit streak that dates back to a March 8th matchup against Stony Brook.
  • Over the course of the streak, the Dunkirk, Md. native is hitting .474, with 27 hits, 11 doubles and five home runs.

Bustillos moving up all-time RBI list

  • During the Indiana series, Bustillos picked up eight RBIs, bringing her season total to 32 and her career total to 141.
  • 141 RBIs moves the Anaheim, Calif. native into second on the all-time Maryland RBI list.

Comeback Kids

  • Twice this season, the Terps have overcome a 10-run deficit to win the game. In addition, the team has made multiple come from behind victories of smaller margins.
  • Maryland overcame a 12-2 deficit in the first game of the Iowa series to defeat the Hawkeye, 15-14. The victory marked the Terps first-ever Big Ten victory.
  • The Terps came back from a 10-2 deficit in the first game of the Ohio State series to win the game 11-10. Corey Schwartz blasted a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
