COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's basketball team will meet North Carolina Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the 2015 Big Ten/ACC Challenge at the Dean Smith Center as announced today by ESPN.
Maryland is tied for the second-most wins all-time in the Challenge, collecting 10 victories since its inception in 1999. Maryland and North Carolina will meet for the 180th time in school history in a series that dates back to 1924.
In its inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference, Maryland won a school record 26 regular season games and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Terps finished 28-7 (14-4 B1G) and had an unblemished 9-0 home record in conference play.
“This is an exciting early season matchup against an outstanding program,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “I have a great deal of respect for Coach Williams. It will be a tremendous opportunity for our program to play in a great environment on the road. I know this will be a game that our fans look forward to as well.
Maryland fell to then-No. 7 Virginia, 76-65, on Dec. 4, 2014 at XFINITY Center in last season's ACC/B1G Challenge. It was the Terps' lone loss at home. Melo Trimble scored 16 points and Maryland also received 14 points from Jake Layman while Dion Wiley put in 12.
The Big Ten captured the Commissioner's Cup last season, winning eight of the 14 matchups. The two conferences split the previous two events, winning six Challenge games each in 2012 and 2013. The ACC won the first 10 Challenges (1999-2008) while the Big Ten won the next three (2009-2011).
Start times and network assignments will be confirmed and announced at a later date.
