
Five Terps Named IWLCA All-Americans

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Five members of the Maryland women's lacrosse team were named IWLCA All-Americans, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Monday.
Taylor Cummings, Megan Douty and Brooke Griffin earned spots on the first team while Alice Mercer was named to the second team and Megan Whittle earned third team honors. All five Terps were named to the IWLCA All-South Region team last week.
Cummings earned her third IWLCA First Team All-American honors after leading Maryland to the NCAA Final Four with 31 assists, 89 points, 40 ground balls, 131 draw controls and 34 caused turnovers. The junior midfielder is a 2015 Tewaaraton finalist and the reigning Tewaaraton winner and Big Ten Midfielder of the Year.
Douty, the 2015 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, leads the fifth-ranked Terrapin defense. The senior defender, who was also an IWLCA First Team All-American in 2014, has 27 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers this season.
Griffin also earns IWLCA First Team All-American honors for the second straight season. She was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year after leading the fifth-ranked offense in the nation. Griffin has 44 goals and 19 assists on the season.
Mercer earns All-American honors for the second time in her career after being named to the third team in 2014. The junior defender, who was also picked to the All-Big Ten team, has 17 ground balls, 12 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers on the season.
Whittle has played an important role on the Maryland offense as just a freshman and leads the team with 64 goals.
The five Terrapins are the most of any program honored by the IWLCA, and Maryland has the most players on the first team of any team.
The IWLCA honored 48 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on the All-America teams for 2015. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King Prussia, Pa.
The top-seeded Terps battle No. 4 seed Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament semifinals Friday. Opening draw in scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at PPL Park in Chester Pa., on ESPN3.
