Incoming freshman Caroline Steele concluded her high school career with a bang. The attacker was named the MVP of the prestigious Under Armour All-American game last Friday after posting one goal and four assists in the contest. Steele led the South team to a 14-12 victory over the North team.
Steele, who broke Severn's single-season scoring record with 94 goals in the spring, competed with six of her future Maryland teammates. She was joined by defender Julia Braig, attacker Kelsey Cummings, defender Meghan Doherty, midfielder Jen Giles and goalkeeper Megan Taylor on the South team while Shelby Mercer competed for the North squad.
Q&A With Caroline Steele
Q: How did it feel to play in the Under Armour All-American game?
A: “It was such an honor to be selected. It was so much fun being in the game and playing with and against some of the best talent. It was just awesome.”
Q: What was your mindset going into the game?
A: “I wanted to go in there and mostly have fun. I wanted to be competitive and kind of start the transition of moving to the college game. Obviously I couldn't have done any of it without my teammates, so it was definitely a team effort.”
Q: What was it like to win the MVP award?
A: “It was like a dream. They called my name and I just thought, 'Oh my gosh.' It was awesome.”
Q: What was it like to play with some of your Maryland classmates?
A: “It was a lot of fun. It was the first time I was able to get on the field and play with them. I've played against them for years, but it was great to be able to play with them and get used to what's coming in the future.”
Q: Did you have any on-field chemistry with your future Terrapin teammates?
A: “I think I had a good connection with Jen [Giles], and obviously Kelsey [Cummings]. Meghan [Doherty], Julia [Braig] and Megan [Taylor] were all on defense and then Shelby [Mercer] was on the other team. But I think the three of us on attack all made some noise and were connecting pretty well.”
Q: Do you think you learned anything in the Under Armour game that you can translate to Maryland?
A: “I scored more goals in high school, so this game helped open me up to feed more. Being able to be out there with a lot of great players who you can trust, I think it was a good intro to playing on a college team.”
Q: You'll officially be a Terp next month. What are you most excited about?
A: “I'm just so excited to finally be on campus and finally be with the team. I'm excited to start lacrosse and start contributing towards next season. I'm planning on majoring in elementary school education, so I'm also excited to start classes for that.”
