Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Four Terrapins scored as the ninth-ranked Maryland field hockey team beat Michigan State, 5-1, Sunday for the Terps' sixth straight win. The Terrapins (8-3, 3-0 Big Ten) got off to a hot start, scoring all give goals in the first half.
Fifth-year senior Welma Luus picked up where she left off after her two-goal outing in Friday's win over No. 18 Michigan. She tapped in a shot from the right post just 1:25 into the game to give Maryland the early lead.
Nine minutes into the match, freshman Linnea Gonzales scored her first of the day when she slammed in a shot off a penalty corner. Redshirt junior Emma Rissinger and senior Anna Dessoye assisted on the play.
Sophomore Carrie Hanks made it a three-goal lead for Maryland when she scored her second of the year off a penalty corner with 20 minutes left in the half. Dessoye and junior Floor Paanakker assisted on the play. Just over a minute later, Gonzales scored from the top left side of the circle for a 4-0 lead.
Redshirt sophomore Brooke Adler notched her first goal of the year when she tapped one in off a rebound on a penalty corner seven minutes before halftime. The Terrapins would take a 5-0 lead into the break.
The Spartans got on the board 10 minutes into the second half when Shelby Supica pushed one over the goal line.
The Terrapins took 25 shots to the Spartans' eight. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday had one save in the first half and senior goalkeeper Jill Genovese had two in the second.
Head coach Missy Meharg is in her 28th season as head coach of the Terrapins. She's led them to a record of 498-122-9 (.799), seven NCAA titles, 20 conference titles and 16 Final Fours. With two more wins, Meharg will be just the fourth Division I head coach to reach the 500-win mark.
Next, the Terrapins will open a three-week road swing with a trip to Ohio State (6-3, 2-0) Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Terps-Buckeyes game will be streamed live online through Buckeye Vision.
