COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's basketball team hosted an open practice Saturday afternoon at XFINITY Center in advance of the Terps' home football game versus Michigan State.
Maryland – who came in at No. 21in the preseason USA Today/Coaches Top 25 poll released Thursday – ran drills for the first half of practice before wrapping up with a Red/Gold scrimmage. Melo Trimble led all scorers with 16 points, while Anthony Cowan and L.G. Gill chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Head coach Mark Turgeon lauded Gill and freshman Kevin Huerter's performances.
“This was fun for me today because I got the opportunity to sit back and watch our team play,” Turgeon said. “I thought L.G. (Gill) and Kevin (Huerter) looked very good.
“Melo (Trimble) and Anthony (Cowan) are really feeding off each other and they've gotten a lot better in the last few weeks. It's great to see.”
The Terps are continuing to focus on defense before hosting Catawba College in the team's lone exhibition game of the season on Nov. 5.
“All summer, our guys have worked on defense,” Turgeon said. “Once we can lock in, play five guys, we are going to keep getting better. We are adding new stuff all the time.”
Maryland officially starts its season when it plays host to American on Nov. 11 at XFINITY Center.
