COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's basketball team welcomes St. Mary's College of Maryland for a Thursday night tilt at XFINITY Center.
storylines
• Melo Trimble scored 22 points, including two free throws with 7.6 seconds left, and Maryland made up a nine-point deficit in the closing minutes to beat Georgetown 76-75 Tuesday night at Verizon Center in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.
• Freshman Justin Jackson scored a career-high 17 points and added a team-high seven rebounds while classmate Anthony Cowan posted 11 points and added a game-high five assists. Freshman Kevin Huerter made a block on the final play of the game to preserve the win as the Terps moved to 2-0 in Gavitt Games play.
• Cowan and Huerter became the first freshman duo to start in a Maryland season-opener since Joe Smith and Keith Booth on Nov. 26, 1993 vs. Georgetown when the pair started in a win against American on Nov. 11 to kick off the 2016-17 campaign. Cowan, Huerter and Jackson have combined for 55 of Maryland's 138 points and 41 of its 78 rebounds this season.
• Junior guard Melo Trimble was named to the Wooden Award Watch List on Nov. 15. He led the Terps in scoring (14.8 ppg), assists (5.0 apg), free throw percentage (.868) and steals (44) last season as Maryland advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2003. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native joins Naismith National Player of the Year Joe Smith as one of only two Terrapins to notch 500 or more points in each of their first two seasons in College Park. He is averaging 22 points a game for the Terps through the first two contests this season.
• With two assists at Georgetown on Nov. 15, Trimble moved to No. 25 all-time in career dimes, passing Laron Profit (1995-99). He now has 288 after posting a career-high 176 in 2016-17, 70 more than he recorded during his freshman campaign.
