Big Ten Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. – 18 student-athletes from the University of Maryland men's basketball, women's basketball, gymnastics and wrestling programs were named Big Ten Winter All-Academic selections in a release made by the conference offices Wednesday afternoon.
“Our student-athletes have worked incredibly hard to achieve this prestigious honor,” said director of athletics Kevin Anderson. “We are extremely proud of the continued success of our student-athletes, who commit themselves on a daily basis both in the classroom and on the playing field.”
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Senior Varun Ram of the men's basketball team holds a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average, one of just 12 student-athletes in the league on the academic all-conference list. He was the only men's basketball player in the conference to maintain an unblemished GPA.
The Big Ten recognized a total of 780 students who competed in winter sports from all 14 member institutions (track & field is acknowledged in the spring).
