IOWA CITY – Junior Nick Cieri went 3-for-4, but the Maryland baseball team dropped an 8-1 decision to Iowa at Banks Field Friday afternoon.
The Terrapins (10-11) notched the first run of the game, but couldn't get anymore past Iowa starter C.J. Eldred. Cieri added an RBI to his three hits.
Maryland opened the scoring in the first. Junior Madison Nickens slapped a single through the right side before moving to second on a Nick Dunn groundout. Cieri then singled to bring home Nickens and make the score 1-0.
Iowa took control of the contest with a four spot in the bottom half of the second. Maryland starter Mike Shawaryn grabbed a couple of outs before Mason McCoy hit a ground ruled double to left center. Eric Schenck-Joblinske was then hit by a pitch before Robert Neustrom tripled to clear the bases. Joel Booker followed with a two-run homer to make it 4-1 Iowa.
Maryland attempted to rally in the third and had runners on the corners, but Dunn grounded into a double play to end the inning. The Terrapin fifth ended in similar fashion when a Kevin Smith double play ball eliminated Andrew Bechtold.
The Hawkeyes picked up a single run in the fifth before a two-spot in the seventh and one in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Shawaryn notched eight strikeouts on the night and moved past Eric Milton for fourth on the school's all-time list. He now has 241. Dunn reached on an error in the eighth and has now made it to the base paths in all 21 games this season.
The Terps return to action Saturday against the Hawkeyes. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 from Banks Field and the game can be streamed live on BTN Plus.
