IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sophomore Taylor Bloom tossed seven innings of shutout ball, but the Maryland baseball team fell, 4-1, at Banks Field Saturday afternoon.
The Terrapins (10-12) led until the eighth when Iowa plated four runs to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Kevin Biondic's home run in the fourth was Maryland's lone run of the game.
The Terps combined solid work from Bloom and Justin Morris' defense behind the plate to keep the Hawkeyes at bay in the early innings. Bloom allowed just two base runners in the first three frames, but Morris gunned down a Hawkeye at second to end the first and third innings.
Maryland took the lead in the fourth. With two outs, Biondic hammered a 1-1 pitch from Iowa starter Tyler Peyton over the fence in left field for his fourth home run of the season.
Bloom put together his third straight fantastic outing for the Terps. The sophomore gave up five hits, did now allow a run and struck out four. He lowered his ERA to a team-best 1.84 and has struck out 32 to just four walks this season.
In the eighth, Kevin Smith slammed a two-out double before Nickens drew a walk on a full count. Nick Dunn was then hit by a pitch to bring up Nick Cieri, but the junior grounded into a fielder's choice that saw Dunn putout at second.
Iowa plated four runs, three of them unearned, to take the lead in the eighth. Peyton's two-RBI single was the key hit of the inning.
Nickens went 3-for-3 and reached all four times at the plate. Dunn was hit by a pitch in the first and has now reached base in all 22 games.
The Terps return to action Saturday against the Hawkeyes. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 ET from Banks Field and the game can be streamed live on BTN Plus.
