COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland baseball team fell, 7-2, to High Point at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Friday night.
The Terrapins (13-13, 1-2 Big Ten) fell behind early and were unable to make up the deficit against the Panthers despite out hitting the away team 7-5. Freshman Marty Costes' two-run home run in the sixth was Maryland's lone scoring on the afternoon.
After a couple of shutdown frames to start the contest, High Point got to Maryland starter RHP Mike Shawaryn in the third with a Hunter Lee single that brought home a run. The Panthers chased Shawaryn in the third with a pair of runs and took a 3-0 lead before Ryan Selmer came in to end the threat.
Lee continued his hot day with a solo shot in the fifth before Maryland loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, only to see Justin Morris strikeout and Madison Nickens pop out to end the inning.
After High Point struck with two more runs in the sixth, Costes crushed a two-run shot to make the score 6-2. The Panthers finished the scoring in the seventh with a single run.
Maryland pitching only allowed five hits and freshman Zach Guth came on to throw a pair of solid clean innings. Sophomore Kevin Biondic upped his hitting streak to seven while Nickens has reached base in 11 straight games. Costes is now tied for the team lead with five multi-RBI games and he leads the squad with 19 total.
The Terps and the Panthers are scheduled to square off in game two of the three game set Saturday at 2 p.m. Fans can tune in live to the contest on the Maryland Baseball Network.
