COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Marty Costes hit two home runs to lead the Maryland baseball team past High Point, 13-5, at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Saturday night.
The Terrapins (14-13, 1-2 Big Ten) jumped out to a 10-0 lead after three innings and pounded out 11 hits. Costes finished with four RBIs and three runs scored while fellow freshman Nick Dunn scored three times. Sophomore Taylor Bloom picked up his fourth win of the season after 5 and two thirds innings of work.
High Point starter Andre Scrubb walked the first two batters of the game before Costes reached on a fielder's choice that put Madison Nickens on third. Nickens then scored on a wild pitch. After Kevin Biondic walked, Kevin Smith singled to load the bases. All three Terps subsequently scored when an Anthony Papio pop up was dropped.
Maryland plated two more with two outs in the second. Scrubb issued for straight walks to Nick Dunn, Nick Cieri, Costes and Biondic to plate a run. Hennessey came on in relief, but walked Smith to give the Terps another run.
A four-run Terrapin fourth game the home team a 10-0 lead. Redshirt freshman Andrew Bechtold singled before stealing second. Dunn then ripped an RBI single into left before nabbing a stolen base of his own. Cieri followed with a single to left to score the freshman.
That brought up Costes, who slammed a 2-1 offering over the fence in right-center to make the score 10-0.
High Point grabbed a couple runs in the top half of the fifth before the Terps scored three more in the ensuing half inning. Costes hit his second two run homer of the contest to left field before a Papio RBI double that brought in Biondic, who had notched a double of his own.
Bloom picked up the win with a solid outing that saw him pitch into the sixth. Relievers Robert Galligan, Andrew Miller and John Murphy combined to finish out the contest.
Costes' two home run game was his second of the season (Cal State Fullerton, March 19) and he now leads the team in home runs (6) and RBIs (23).
The Terps' 13 runs tied a season high.
Maryland and High Point face off in the rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium. Fans can tune in to the action live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
