COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Marty Costes recorded two hits, but the Maryland baseball team fell, 7-1, to Purdue at Bob “Turtle Smith Stadium Friday afternoon.
The Terrapins (19-18, 5-5 Big Ten) mustered seven hits and a run in the second. Purdue starter Gavin Downs worked eight innings of one-run ball.
Purdue jumped in front in the top of the first on a Kyle Johnson solo home run. Maryland responded with a run in the second. Costes ripped a double to left field with two outs before scoring when senior Anthony Papio legged out an infield single to second.
The Boilermakers took the lead for good in the third with three runs off Maryland starter Brian Shaffer. Purdue chased Stiles with a run in the fourth. Junior Tayler Stiles was solid in his two and two thirds of an inning in relief, giving up just one run.
Purdue's final run came on a James Jewell solo homer off Zach Guth in the eighth. Sophomore Ryan Selmer and freshman Cameron Enck worked clean innings of relief.
Maryland threatened in the seventh and eighth, but couldn't put any runs across. The Terps had runners on the corners with two down in the seventh, but redshirt freshman Andrew Bechtold flied out to end the inning.
The Terps loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth. Sophomore Kevin Smith singled to the shortstop before a Nick Dunn walk. Junior Nick Cieri then slapped a single to bring up Kevin Biondic, but the sophomore Kevin Biondic grounded into a fielder's choice.
