Day One Recap
PRINCETON, N.J. – Chioma Onyekwere was sensational again for the Terps, breaking the meet record while setting a personal best in the shot put on the final day of the Larry Ellis Princeton Invitational Saturday. The Fairfax, Va. native won the event with a throw of 16.41 meters (53'10.25”), nearly nine inches further than her previous career best.
Sophomore Claudia Ababio took sixth in the shotput, launching a throw 13.52 meters. She went on to finish seventh in the discus, clearing 42.51 meters.
Junior Alexa Squirini finished eighth in a loaded field of 800 meter runners, claiming a top-10 time with a mark of 2:14.92.
Senior Emily VandeWater had a solid showing in the 1500, taking eighth in a deep field with a time of 4:42.12. Freshman Kiernan Keller was not far behind, finishing 14th in 4:45.24.
Senior Dan Trettel starred for the Terps in the 1500 at Princeton, finishing second in a field of 50 runners with a time of 3:55.41. Freshman Adam Herskovits was 37th in the event, finishing in 4:08.54.
Morgan State Legacy Meet
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Maryland women turned in several event victories to eventually finish second with a two-day total of 94 points at the Morgan State Legacy Meet. The Terrapin men also had a good showing, finishing sixth in the field with a 54-point total.
Junior Lisa Meneau topped the field in the 400 hurdles, crossing the line in 1:00.00 to notch a win in the event. Juniors Alexandra Cimino (1:01.41) and Taylor Tucker (1:02.76) also finished in the top-five, claiming third and fifth (respectively) to score for the Terps.
Sophomore Alexandra Lucki posted a win in the 1500 a day removed from running the 800 at Princeton. The Ontario, Canada native outpaced the field by nearly eight seconds, finishing in 4:33.04 to claim the victory. She ran her second 800 of the weekend in 2:13.25, finishing as the top Terp in third place. Junior Rachelle Alexander was sixth in the field with a time of 2:14.86.
Junior Micha Powell asserted herself in the 400 meter dash, winning the race in 53.49. Junior Catherine Voelpel took ninth (57.44) while Charlotte Staver (1:00.68) was 29th. Sophomore Peyton Wade had a solid day, which included a win in the long jump with a career-best leap of 5.78 meters. She went on to finish fifth in 100 hurdles (14.03) and 27th in the 200 (25.74).
The Maryland women capped off the meet with a win in the 4x400 relay, as Meneau, Tucker, Cimino and Powell crossed the line in 3:47.15 to win the event.
Sophomore Kayla Richardson (5.23m) and freshman Jewel Smith (5.19m) both turned in top-15 performances in the long jump, taking 10th and 12th (respectively). Richardson also took ninth in the triple jump with a leap off 11.12 meters.
Sophomore Chandler Baxter represented Maryland in the 100 meter dash, finishing 22nd in the prelims with a time of 12.61. She went on to finish as the top Terp in the 200 with a time of 25.60. Senior Johnna Dominick was fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.68 meters.
On the men's side, junior Paul Joseph posted a personal-best 52.76 in the 400 hurdles, finishing in 52.76 to take second in the event.
Junior Brandon Thompson (10.58) and freshman AJ Ruffin (10.72) both ran in the 100 meter dash finals, securing sixth and eighth place (respectively) in the race. Thompson went on to claim fourth in the 200 dash as the top Terrapin finisher.
Sophomore Alex Leto turned in a sixth place finish in the 400, finishing in 47.50. Freshman TJ Bleichner was the top Maryland finisher in the 800, posting a time of 1:52.90. Sophomore Diego Lyon ran his way into the 110 meter hurdle finals, taking sixth in 14.91.
The Maryland 'A' 4x400 squad of Leto, Bleichner, Thomas and Joseph took second in the field, finishing in 3:16.10. In the field events, sophomore Josh Landsman was sixth in the high jump (1.88m) while freshman Carlos Vanzego was fifth in the triple jump (14.56).
The Maryland track & field programs will return to competition April 28-30 at the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
