Rescigno, Galligan Taken on Day 3 of MLB Draft

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland junior right-handed pitcher Mike Rescigno and senior left-handed pitcher Robert Galligan were selected on day three of the 2016 MLB Draft Saturday afternoon.

Rescigno was taken by the San Francisco Giants in the 25th round (755th overall) while Galligan went off the board to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 36th round (1079th overall). Maryland had three players selected in the draft in total after RHP Mike Shawaryn was taken in the fifth round by the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

“We are very happy for the Mike and Rob.” head coach John Szefc said. They have dedicated themselves everyday on and off the field over their time here. We are delighted that they have the opportunity to play professional baseball and can't wait to see what they do in their careers.”

A converted position player who played in 36 games as a freshman in 2014, Rescigno pitched just four innings with a 2.25 ERA last season before emerging as one of Maryland's top bullpen arms this year.

The Monmouth Beach, N.J., native flashed immense potential throughout the year and recorded a 5.59 ERA in 19 and a third innings pitched. He struck out 23 batters and recorded three saves.

Galligan has been a stalwart in the Maryland bullpen since 2015 and sits in the top 15 in Maryland history with 67 career appearances. He emerged as one of the Terps' most versatile arms in the 2015 team's run to the NCAA Super Regionals when he recorded a 2.74 ERA in 62.1 IP. The Syosset, N.Y. native struck out 58 and recorded four wins in 27 appearances, the second most on the team.

In 2016, Galligan tied for the team lead with 26 appearances and notched a 3.09 ERA in 23.1 IP. The fifth-year senior also was active in the campus community, serving as the vice president of Maryland Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Maryland has produced 19 MLB Draft picks under its current staff, led by Szefc. The Terps finished the season with their fifth-straight 30-win season, a program record.
