COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Twelve current and former members of the Maryland women's lacrosse team suited up for their national teams on numerous tours this summer.
Six former Terps, including Alex Aust, Taylor Cummings, Megan Douty, Brooke Griffin, Alice Mercer and Katie Schwarzmann, represented Team USA on its foreign tour. Rising junior Megan Whittle saw her first international play for Team England alongside former Terps Camilla Hayes and Laura Merrifield. Rising senior Theo Kwas competed for Team Australia with former Terps Courtney Hobbs and Sarah Mollison.
Team USA went 5-0 on its foreign tour last week in England. The Americans dominated every opponent on the tour, including a 21-7 win over the English developmental team, a 20-0 win over Scotland, a 20-2 win over England, a 19-1 win over Germany and a 20-1 win over Wales.
Against Scotland, Cummings led Team USA with five goals before posting two against England, taking home match MVP honors. Aust scored twice each against Scotland and England, and Griffin led the team with three goals and three assists against Germany.
Against the U.S., Whittle scored one goal and added an assist. Last month, the English National Team traveled to Australia for a test series of eight games. England posted two 13-7 wins over Australia, a 17-1 victory over New Zealand, a 9-9 draw with South Australia, a 22-4 win over Western Australia and a 12-0 shutout over New South Wales.
Whittle posted 12 goals and one assist in the tournament while Merrifield, Team England's captain, posted 13 goals and one assist. Hayes notched three goals and one assist and was named MVP of the South Australian game.
Mollison posted four goals against England for Team Australia.
Next summer, the international teams will compete in the 2017 FIL Women's World Cup in Guildford, England. Thirty-two national teams have qualified to compete. The United States has won the last two World Cups.
