Terps 2 Italy! Day Eight

Aug. 13, 2016 - COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Home Sweet USA! While everyone thoroughly enjoyed the Italian culture, everyone is glad to be home! The Terrapins left Lake Como at 7 a.m. local time (1 a.m. ET) and drove to the airport in Milan. After a flight delay, they finally departed for JFK Airport in New York at 1:30 p.m. local time.

Once in New York, many players caught flights to their hometowns to spend time with family before the start of the school year.

Grateful for such a wonderful trip and experience!

Aug. 12, 2016 - LAKE COMO, Italy - The Terrapins started their last day in Italy with a boat cruise of the beautiful villas of Lake Como. They saw gorgeous villas and even one that belongs to George Clooney. Their cruise included a stop in the town of Bellagio.

After their morning tour of the lake, they prepared for their second game of the trip. They took on Italy Select - a team of players mostly from the Italian National Team system.

The Terrapins dominated the game from the start. Sophomore Brianna Fraser scored the first six points of the game and led the way with 18 total. Freshman Kaila Charles added 16 and freshman Destiny Slocum scored 14 as six Terps in double figures. The Terrapins went on a key 22-4 run in the second half to pull away.

After the game, the Terps met SSGT Sabrina Hachett, who is currently stationed in Aviano with the Air Force. She drove three hours to come see her favorite team play!

Aug. 11, 2016 - LAKE COMO, Italy - The Terps decided to drive 40 km to Lake Lugano Switzerland Thursday morning. The Alps were beautiful and it was so interesting to see yet another country. They tried Swiss chocolate and walked through the marketplace of Lugano.

In the afternoon, the Terrapins visited the town of Como, about 15 minutes from the town where they are staying, called Cernobbio. They shopped and took the ferry on the lake. Many team members took the mountainside tram up to the top of one of the mountains to see spectacular views of the lake and the Alps.

Aug. 10, 2016 - FLORENCE, Italy - The Terrapins decided to spend a few extra hours in Florence Wednesday morning to shop for fine leather and enjoy the sites, such as the famous Ponte Vecchio.

After lunch, the Terrapins boarded the bus for a four-hour drive north to the town of Cernobbio, on Lake Como in the Alps. The scenes were gorgeous!

Check out some highlights and hear Destiny Slocum talk about last night's game below.

Aug. 9, 2016 - FLORENCE, Italy - Welcome to Firenze! The Terrapins arrived in Florence after a three-hour trek through Tuscany. They fell in love with the beautiful streets and piazzas!

In the morning, many Terps strolled through the markets and shopped for leather goods for family and friends. They toured the streets and saw the famous David sculpture by Michelangelo before preparing for their first game this evening.

Maryland took on the German professional team TK Hannover in a town north of Florence called Ponte Buggianese. Freshmen Destiny Slocum and Sarah Myers led the Terps with 10 points each. Sophomore Kiah Gillespie and senior Brionna Jones each added nine and sophomore Brianna Fraser scored eight.

The Terrapins trailed through the second half, then went on a furious run scoring 26 points in the fourth quarter alone. They fell 66-62 in their first of two games on the trip.

Aug. 8, 2016 - ROME, Italy - The Terrapins enjoyed a festive dinner in their last evening in Rome, then woke up early Monday morning to head to Vatican City. They learned about the art of Michaelangelo in the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basiliica. After lunch, the team made the three-hour drive north to Florence.

Aug. 7, 2016 - ROME, Italy - The Maryland women's basketball team started day two of the tour of Italy with a walking tour of the most famous sites in Rome. They visited the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain.

Aug. 6, 2016 - ROME, Italy - After a nine-hour flight across the Atlantic Ocean, the Terrapins landed in Rome early Saturday morning and hit the ground running. They embarked on a bus tour through some of Rome's most known sites, then toured The Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

Aug, 4, 2016 - COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terrapins finished their last of eight practices Thursday morning before heading to Italy Friday. Head coach Brenda Frese and the staff assigned each class a city in Italy to research and then educate the team about it. They celebrated the final presentation with Italian ice after practice!
