PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior Jake Rozhansky put through the game-winner in double overtime off a Sebastian Elney assist to lift the No. 4 Maryland men's soccer team past Rutgers, 2-1, on Tuesday night.
Maryland held a significant shot advantage over Rutgers, outshooting the Scarlet Knights 22-2 throughout the contest. Gordon Wild started off the scoring in the fifth minute with his sixth goal in as many games on a penalty kick. Rutgers tied the game up in the 26th minute on their first shot of the game off a corner.
“I'm extremely happy that we got the win, I think it was a deserved victory,” said head coach Sasho Cirovski. “I have to give Rutgers a tremendous amount of credit for their organization and competitiveness today. I thought tonight we saw a very proud Rutgers team fight to the final whistle. We came out strong, got the early goal, and then I thought we relaxed a little bit. We controlled the tempo of the entire game. I'm just happy we can walk out of here with three points.”
The Terrapins had a chance to take the lead in the 66th minute off consecutive shots by Rozhansky and George Campbell that were both saved. Maryland dominated possession throughout the second half.
After a scoreless first overtime, Rozhansky scored the golden goal off a rebound from an Elney blocked shot. The game winner in the 103rd minute gave the transfer from Virginia his first goal as a Terp and Maryland the win.
Picking up their first road win of the 2016 season, Maryland moves to 4-0-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in the Big Ten. The Terrapins will return home to Ludwig Field on Sunday for a 5:00 p.m. bout against Penn State.
