WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Maryland Athletics Department teamed up with Georgetown University to participate in College Rivalry Day Tuesday as part of festivities surrounding the Washington Nationals game versus the New York Mets.
After having the opportunity to check out batting practice on the field prior to the game, Terrapin Club Scholarship Fund Vice President Mike Freiman and longtime member Scott Wilson participated in pregame events including the Nationals Spirit Award and the delivery of the lineup card.
Former Terp legend Walt Williams tossed out the first pitch to rookie Nationals pitcher Reynaldo Lopez. Williams, who has spent more than a decade as part of the Maryland Basketball radio broadcast team, finished his career with 1,704 points prior to being selected a first-round draft pick by the Sacramento Kings in 1992.
“I've been under a few pressure situations in my life so tonight was just about having fun,” Williams, who first faked a step-back jumper before throwing a strike from the mound, said. “I'm born and raised right here in Washington, D.C., so to be out here representing the Terps is great.”
The Maryland cheer and dance teams joined Testudo and the Georgetown cheerleaders and Jack the Bulldog to welcome the Nationals starters on the field. Additionally, Testudo and Jack held the finish line as George Washington won the Geico President's Race.
