PRINCETON, N.J. – The sixth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (6-2, 1-0 B1G) won at No. 13 Princeton, 2-1, Tuesday night at the Tigers' Bedford Field.
Graduate student Grace Balsdon gave the Terrapins the early lead when she scored off a penalty corner just 3:50 into the match. Redshirt seniors Welma Luus and Emma Rissinger assisted on the play.
The Terrapins would lead the Tigers 1-0 at halftime.
Princeton (3-3) tied the game just 90 seconds into the second half when Cat Caro tipped a loose ball into the cage.
In the 53rd minute, Balsdon put the Terrapins back on top with another score off a penalty corner with 17:33 to play.
“Exceedingly pleased with the outcome,” head coach Missy Meharg said. "Princeton is really well-coached. Former Terps Carla Tagliente and Dina Rizzo are doing tremendously well together. Their energy was inspiring. The reality for us is our penalty corners are on the mark right now. Marissa Cutry came in and played extremely well. She was our player of the game. This is a big, big result for us because this Princeton team wll stay in the top national ranks throughout the year."
Maryland outshot Princeton 14-9 and had seven penalty corners to five.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Holliday picked up three saves to preserve the Terps' fifth straight victory.
Holliday was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career Tuesday. She made a career-high eight saves in the Terrapins' 4-1 win over Indiana Saturday, including five in the second half as the Hoosiers threatened to even the score.
Next, the Terrapins will play at No. 15 Iowa (6-2, 0-1) Friday at 4 p.m. ET and at No. 11 Northwestern (6-2, 1-0) Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Both games will be streamed online through BTN2Go.com.
