Maryland Earns NCAA Tournament Spot

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland baseball team will make its third NCAA Tournament appearance in four years after earning the No. 3 seed in the Winston-Salem Regional Monday afternoon. The Terps will take on second seeded West Virginia on Friday, June 2 at 2 p.m., at David F. Couch Ballpark.
The Terrapins, who enter the tournament with a 37-21 mark, advance to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history. Maryland had three NCAA Tournament appearances in 120 years of baseball prior to 2014. Wake Forest is the top seed in the regional, while UMBC was given the four seed. Those two teams will play Friday night at 7 p.m.
“There's a lot of work, a lot of time, there's a lot of ups and downs that go into a day like this,” head coach John Szefc said. “I just want to thank the committee for giving us this opportunity and we will absolutely be ready.”
Maryland features the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year junior RHP Brian Shaffer and the Big Ten Freshman of the Year LHP Tyler Blohm. First-team All-Big Ten outfielder Marty Costes and third-team All-Big Ten third baseman AJ Lee lead Maryland's offense, along with outfielder Zach Jancarski and first baseman Brandon Gum.
The Terps' last NCAA Regional appearance came in 2015, when Maryland knocked off top overall seed UCLA to win the Los Angeles Regional.
Saturday's games are also set for 2 p.m. (loser's bracket) and 7 p.m. (winner's bracket). The teams with 1-1 records will square off on Sunday at noon, and the winner of that game playing the undefeated team at 5 p.m. Sunday.
If necessary, Monday's winner-take-all game would be played at 7 p.m.
Friday afternoon's game will be shown live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN App. Fans can also listen live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
