
Four Terps Taken on Day 3 of MLB Draft

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Four University of Maryland baseball players were selected on the third and final day of the 2017 MLB Draft on Wednesday. Junior right-handed pitcher Jamal Wade (17th round, Seattle Mariners), sophomore outfielder Marty Costes (25th round, Houston Astros), redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Selmer (31st round, New York Mets) and senior right-handed pitcher Jared Price (37th round, Miami Marlins) were all taken.
Maryland had two draftees on Tuesday; Kevin Smith and Brian Shaffer. Maryland's six drafted players is its second most in a single draft in school history. The 2015 draft saw eight Maryland players selected.
Wade excelled in his first year as a pitcher, striking out 33 batter in just 19 and two thirds of an inning. He held opponents to a .203 average against and appeared 17 times. Wade's brother LaMonte, who played at Maryland from 2013-15, was a ninth round pick of the Minnesota Twins in the 2015 MLB Draft.
Costes was one of the top offensive threats in the Big Ten in 2017, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors after batting .322 with 13 home runs and 46 RBIs. Costes led the Terps with 131 total bases and notched a slugging percentage of .548. The Baltimore native was a freshman All-American in 2016.
Selmer ranks second in Maryland history with 85 career appearances and fifth with 12 career saves. He was Maryland's top option out of the bullpen in 2017, tossing 41 and one third innings with a 3.05 ERA and eight saves. He tied Maryland's single season appearance record with 31 in 2015.
A fifth-year senior, Price notched his best year in College Park in 2017, recording a 3.04 ERA in 23 and two thirds innings while striking out 27 batters. Price finishes his career with the 10th most appearances in Maryland history (71). He was selected in the 33rd round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the New York Mets.
