ROSEMONT, Ill. – After helping lead No. 3 Maryland to consecutive shutouts against Big Ten opposition, sophomore defender Johannes Bergmann was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Bergmann, a native of Erfurt, Germany, played all 180 minutes in Maryland's shutout wins over Rutgers and Penn State. He paired with sophomore Miles Stray in central defense against the Scarlet Knights as the Terps allowed just three shots.
On Sunday against Penn State, Bergmann was deployed next to sophomore Donovan Pines and did not miss a beat, limiting the Nittany Lions to just two shots. Senior George Campbell and junior Chase Gasper formed the remainder of the back four in both matches.
Maryland has notched four straight shutouts and not allowed a goal in the last 387 minutes of action. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair has also been a standout over that stretch.
The Terps return to action Friday night in a Big Ten showdown with No. 6 Michigan State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and fans can follow the action on BTN Plus.
