Terps Fall at #9 Penn State in Three

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Maryland volleyball team fell to No. 9 Penn State in straight sets (16-25, 15-25, 16-25) on Friday night.

Freshman outside hitter Emma Schriner led the way offensively for Maryland with nine kills and only two errors on 19 takes, a .368 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Nicole Alford tallied 22 assists and freshman libero Allegra Rivas led with 13 digs.

Maryland had their best hitting set in the third at .108. Schriner hit .605 with five kills and no errors on eight swings while the Terps out-blocked Penn State, three to two.

Freshman middle blocker Rainelle Jones had three kills and a .500 hitting percentage in the second set as the Terps dropped it 25-15.

To start out the match, the Terps were outhit by Penn State .281 to .030 as Maryland lost the first 25-16.

The match in State College marked a homecoming for Head Coach Adam Hughes, who grew up there, went to Penn State and began his career there as a Volunteer Assistant Coach from 2006-08 before returning as the Director of Operations in 2010-13 before coming to Maryland. Assistant Coach Kristin Steadman was also welcomed back at Rec Hall. Steadman won the National Championship with Penn State in 2009 and 2010.

The Terps, now 11-6 (2-3 Big Ten) will road trip to Piscataway, NJ to face Rutgers tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
