
Terps Topple Rutgers in Straight Sets

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Led by a strong offensive performance where the Terps hit .330 as a team, the Maryland volleyball team took down Rutgers in straight sets (27-25, 25-15, 25-14) on Saturday night.
Freshman outside hitter Emma Schriner had her second strong match of the weekend, hitting .583 on eight kills and only one attack error, while also posting four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Erika Pritchard managed 16 kills and hit .314 while redshirt sophomore middle blocker Katie Myers had five kills, three blocks and two service aces at .625 percent.
"Today, even through our walkthrough and scouting report I thought we were locked in," said head coach Adam Hughes. "Credit to our team, we took that into the match and played pretty well. That was a good win for us."
Freshman middle blocker Rainelle Jones led the match with seven blocks. The Terps won the battle at the net, out-blocking the Scarlet Knights 11-4. Sophomore setter Nicole Alford tallied 32 assists. Senior defensive specialist/libero Abigail Bentz led Maryland with nine digs.
The first set was close throughout with both teams making runs. Maryland made the first and last push, going up 19-12 before Rutgers responded to take their first lead at 24-23. The Terps saved off two Rutgers set points by way of a Pritchard kill and service error before freshman libero Allegra Rivas ended the set with an ace to take it 27-25.
The Terps had one of their best runs of the season in the second set, ending the game on a 16-3 run after being down 12-9. Twilley sparked Maryland's run with five kills and three blocks over that span. Maryland had spurts of nine and then five straight points over the run. Senior defensive specialist/libero Abigail Bentz was serving for the 9-0 run and tallied an ace on the run while junior setter Samantha Snyder closed the set out from the service line as Pritchard got the set clinching kill.
Maryland dominated the third set, taking it to seal the match, 25-14. Behind back to back kills by Pritchard and then back to back aces by Myers, the Terps went up 5-0 quick. The Terps hit extremely efficiently at .333 in the third with only two hitting errors. Pritchard had four kills and no errors to lead the way while Jones notched three blocks. Maryland forced 10 Scarlet Knight errors, including a match-ending one to finish the match.
With tonight's win the Terps completed the season sweep of Rutgers, winning in straight sets each time. Maryland now stands at 3-3 in the Big Ten and 12-6 overall. Next weekend, the Terps will host Michigan State and #16 Michigan at the XFINITY Center Pavilion
