COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Kaila Charles scored 22 points, freshman Taylor Mikesell added 15 and No. 9 Maryland won for the second time in three days, beating Dayton 82-71 on Sunday.
Blair Watson and Shakira Austin had 14 points apiece for Maryland, while Stephanie Jones added 11.
"These type of games are the type of games we want to be in," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought the first quarter is how we want to play consistently for 40 minutes. We hung in there down the stretch and I thought Blair, Kaila and Taylor were all tremendous."
Maryland got out to a hot start, leading 28-11 after the opening quarter of play. Charles led the way, ending the opening 10 minutes with 11 points.
The Terrapins extended the lead and led by as many as 23 points midway through the first half, but Dayton chipped away and pulled back within 16 to close out the first half.
Watson's defense took over in the third quarter, forcing a pair of steals to push the Maryland lead back up to 20 midway through the quarter. Maryland ended the quarter shooting 60 percent from the field, and carried a 71-53 advantage into the final 10 minutes of play.
The Terrapins held control in the fourth, and closed out the day forcing 20 Dayton turnovers on the way to a 82-71 victory.
Maryland was efficient shooting the ball all afternoon, ending the day with a 55 percent clip from the field. The Terps also shot 50 percent from three-point territory.
Watson's 14 points came from a 6-of-7 night from the floor, including two-of-three on three-pointers.
Maryland played well defensively, tallying 13 steals and forcing 24 total turnovers.
